World Kiswahili Language Day
In November 2021, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed 7 July as World Kiswahili Language Day, recognizing Kiswahili as the first African language to receive such international recognition.

Celebrating World Kiswahili Language Day
Africatown joined global observances for World Kiswahili Language Day at the Bridge Garden in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic Tanzania in the US. Spoken by over 200 million people worldwide, Kiswahili was honored through educational history discussions, East African cultural performances, and conversations on language preservation and Pan-African unity.
This celebration aligned closely with Africatown’s mission to uplift black heritage, promote cultural education, and strengthen ties across the Diaspora. Most importantly, it deepened our engagement with East African communities across Philadelphia, building strong relationships and paving the way for expanded cultural programming throughout the area.
